Ross Medical Education Center in Port Huron Welcomes Hunter Hospitality House

Ross Medical in Port Huron Welcomes Hunter Hospitality HouseAs future medical professionals, the Port Huron campus believes that students should be aware of local agencies and organizations that provide services to patients in our community to meet their non-medical needs in addition to their medical needs. Tracy Willard, Vice President and Co-Founder of the Hunter Hospitality House (HHH), took time out of her busy schedule to visit the Port Huron campus of Ross Medical Education Center in July to educate the students, staff and faculty on the resources that her very special establishment provides.

After their son two week old son passed away, Jeff and Tracy Willard wanted to see a bed & breakfast-type hospitality house, close to local hospitals, which could be used by exhausted moms wanting to be near their babies but away from the hustle and bustle of the hospital. Being able to take a shower, nap, eat a small meal, while still being on call for that baby who may need nursing, is crucial for those bonding moments after birth. Family members of seriously ill patients on floors such as ICU, surgical, cardiology and oncology or individuals currently receiving outpatient treatment who are in need of lodging would also benefit from a facility like Hunter Hospitality House. The Willard’s believe no one should ever have to be concerned about lodging or amenities while caring for themselves or loved-ones who are in the midst of a medical crisis.

Mary Jo Jobbitt, Medical Assistant Clinic Instructor, said “This is such a wonderful thing they are doing. To be able to take such heart break and turn it into something positive for the community is truly inspiring.”

The students, staff and faculty at the Port Huron campus wanted to be able to support the mission of HHH in some capacity. After speaking with Tracy Willard to identify current needs at Hunter Hospitality House, the campus chose to donate over 70 personal care items and create inspirational cards for future guests in need of lodging during a loved one’s hospital stay. Many students expressed interest in future volunteering opportunities with Hunter Hospitality House and committed to sharing their new found knowledge of this special resource with others in our local community.
