The Ross Medical Education Center campus in Niles has had the wonderful opportunity to work with Austintown Podiatry Associates as an externship site and employer since the campus opened about five years ago. Both Medical Assistant and Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration students are able to complete their externship experiences at the site and nearly 20 have been placed their over the years. They also have hired many Ross graduates. The students and graduates have had very positive experiences at the location. Many of them have shared that they enjoy working with the office manager and other staff. The environment is fast-paced, focused, and positive, making it a perfect place to learn and grow as a healthcare professional. Shayla Gainer, Campus Director at Ross, said of the office, “the greatest thing about working with Austintown Podiatry is that it provides the student entry level skills needed to work in the healthcare field. The site encourages students to take initiative, develop time management skills, and work as a team.” The campus staff looks forward to sending many more externs and graduates there in the future!

What do you like about Ross externs?
They are educated when they come through the door. There is a certain criteria that has to be met before we can even accept them for externship. One thing that we really apprecaite is that the staff at Ross always makes sure they meet that critera. The students come in and usually pick it up pretty fast. They learn back and front and they all seem to cooperate very well.
What is something you like about working with Ross?
I like working with Ross because I know that if we have an opening, I can call them and ask them first if they have students available to hire. They are very quick to respond; if I don’t have the resumes within a half hour, I have them within an hour. We love working with Ross Education students. They are highly educated in their field and willing to learn new things.
How is working with the Career Services team at Ross?
They are very professional. I love working with them. I can call them anytime and they send me students. If there is an issue with anything, they are very proactive in solving the problem. We work well together.
How would you describe your experience with having externs from Ross?
Having students here for an externship is very pleasurable. Our office is a teaching office as we also teach residents, so if we have room for them, we bring in externs as often as we can from Ross.
Overall, how would you assess the success rate of Ross graduates?
They usually do very well. I think out of our employees here now, three of them are Ross graduates and we’ve had others in the past.
What’s the main advantage of hiring a Ross graduate?
For one thing, the advantage is that we know the type of training that they have had. Training time is much less with them.
