Flint Students Attend Affordable Care Act Seminar

Ross Medical Education Center Flint Affordable Care ActOn Tuesday, November 11, the Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration students from the Flint campus of Ross Medical Education Center had the opportunity to attend a seminar on the Affordable Care Act at Davenport University. Rebecca Jackson, instructor for the morning and evening sessions of the Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration program was excited to receive the invitation and be able to bring her students to this event. Knowing that many students in similar programs don’t get these opportunities, Ms. Jackson gushed, “What an exciting time to be in the medical insurance field! Employers will need employees with knowledge of the Affordable Care Act. I love that Ross Medical Education Center gives students a variety of learning opportunities!”

Dr. James Young, Associate Director of the Management program at Davenport, gave a 90 minute presentation on the Affordable Care Act from a practice administrator’s viewpoint. He was an engaging speaker whose presentation kept student’s attention and encouraged discussion. During the seminar, students learned how to classify employees and understand the criteria for deciding on the appropriate employer. This seminar also gave some helpful strategies that work under the Employer Shared Responsibility Mandate. Information was given on “patient centered homes” as well. Students left with more insurance knowledge and a readiness to apply their education in a physician’s office.

All of the students were thrilled to have this opportunity and to gain a little more insight into their field. One of the main messages that resonated with senior Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration student Katherine Bradley was, “It’s not sick care anymore, it’s health care.” Another Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration student, Marie Toney, was impressed with the statement, “Health care is a business, not a profession.” Thank you Ms. Jackson, Dr. James Young, and Davenport University, for this important learning opportunity!
