Port Huron Joins Better World Books

Ross Medical Education Center Port Huron Better World BooksThe Port Huron campus of Ross Medical Education Center donated 127 books during its July book drive supporting Better World Books. The drive kicked off on July 1st and lasted through the month. The campus’ efforts were very well supported by staff, faculty, and students. The campus worked together to collect as many book as possible and ended up donating a large variety of fiction, non-fiction, kids, and educational books.

Better World Books collects and sells books online in order to donate books and fund literacy initiatives worldwide. Their mission is to capitalize on the value of the book to fund literacy initiatives locally, nationally, and around the world. Founded in 2002, Better World Books has more than 8 million new and used titles in stock that will go towards improving the literacy of people around the world. They have already donated more than 10 million books to partner programs around the world. They work with hundreds of nonprofit organizations including Books for Africa and Feed the Children. These organizations take large numbers of donated books and give them to people who need them. They also partner with thousands of libraries and colleges across the U.S. and Canada to collect unwanted books that will then be used to fund literacy initiatives and underfunded schools around the world. Better World Books has also saved more than 73,000 tons of books from being sent to landfills.

The campus staff and faculty wanted to donate to this cause because they have seen firsthand the impact that books can have on the lives of students. They are committed to the cause of literacy and the fact that every person should have the chance to achieve their potential and participate fully in society. This is the second book drive that the campus has done. Stacey Clark, Assistant Campus Director of Education, is the one who found this great organization. She shared, “the first drive went over so well, we thought it was a great idea to do another one. With new students on campus we imagined they too would have books around the house that they were no longer utilizing.” She was right! Many students were excited about how they could so easily help and happily brought in books that they and their families had read and enjoyed. This drive is one that the campus looks forward to doing frequently.
