Ross Medical in New Baltimore Supports Victims of Domestic Violence

Ross Medical Education Center New Baltimore Domestic Violence DriveStaff, faculty, and students from Ross Medical Education Center in New Baltimore, Michigan were bursting with holiday spirit this year. Julie Simmons, Marlean Sitto, and Lyndsey Tune, students in the Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration program, hosted a community service project to raise awareness and support for victims of domestic violence beginning at the end of October. Participation was overwhelming producing over 60 makeup bags donated by Campus Director Jennifer Maniaci and Assistant Director of Education Tammy Stanson filled with toiletries of various items. Some of the items included in the bags were shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, brushes, and combs.

The New Baltimore campus knows that abuse often takes an upward spiral during the holidays and many families are suddenly displaced. This turn of events often leaves them feeling frightened, discouraged and without the necessities. The campus was hoping it was heartwarming to be greeted by educated staff and given those items they had not had time to gather when they hastily left their homes.

Sarah from Turning Point Shelter in Mt. Clemens came to the school in November and presented an inspiring message containing both useful information and resources to the students in the morning classes. With Christmas so near it was decided to extend the campaign which turned out to be more than successful, and Sarah returned once again with inspiration for the evening classes. They were able to add paper products and used cell phones to their collection list that now may also be distributed to those having to dwell in the shelter at Christmas time.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone. On the average, 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical, or emotional abuse. However, help is available through programs, community support, and assistance with protective orders.
